Load-Shedding-Ready Smart Homes

Smart homes in South Africa are only as good as their power and internet. We design our installs so the important stuff keeps working when Eskom trips: hubs and routers on battery backup, and automations that do not need the cloud to run. That means your lights, security and geyser control still behave during load shedding, not just when everything is perfect.

Zigbee & Offline Device Networks

Cloud-dependent gadgets like many Sonoff and Tuya units need internet to respond, which is a problem when the line drops. For the things that must never fail, we build local Zigbee networks that talk to a hub in your house and keep working with no internet at all. You get the app control you want, without the single point of failure.

Farm & Smallholding Installations

Eastern Cape smallholdings have their own automation needs. We fit irrigation controllers, tank level sensors, borehole and pump monitoring, and gate and camera integration, all set up to run locally so a WiFi hiccup never stops your water or your security. It is practical stuff, not gimmicks.

What to Expect

Real jobs, honest expectations

Typical projects we handle

  • Whole-home setups for new builds, installed before ceilings and paint go up
  • Retrofit upgrades adding lighting, plugs and a hub to an existing home without ripping out walls
  • Standard packages for estates and retirement villages, where each unit gets the same dependable setup
  • Smallholding and farm installs covering irrigation, tanks, pumps and cameras

What affects the price

  • The device list itself, which makes up most of the quote, and whether you choose dependable budget brands or premium units
  • Whether it is a simple app-based setup or a local hub like Home Assistant, which adds a small computer and battery backup to keep it alive during load shedding
  • The electrical work involved, such as replacing light switches, adding wiring for wall panels or installing geyser controllers
  • Home size and how many rooms, sensors and automations are actually in scope, because a one-bedroom flat and a five-bedroom house are very different jobs

FAQ

Smart Home Automation — common questions

Can you add smart features to an existing home?+

Yes. Most smart home systems are wireless or use existing wiring, so we can upgrade your current home without a big renovation.

Do I need internet for smart home automation?+

You need internet for remote control away from home, but most systems keep working locally and on backup power during outages if configured that way.

How do I control everything?+

Through one app on your phone, and optionally with voice assistants. We set everything up and show you how to use it.

Can smart home systems help with load shedding?+

Yes. Combined with solar and battery backup, smart energy management can automatically shed non-essential loads and keep essentials running.

Is smart home gear safe on older wiring?+

Yes, as long as the devices are rated for SA mains and the circuit they go on is sound. Part of our job is checking the wiring before we fit anything, and we recommend surge protection because lightning and Eskom surges are what actually kill these gadgets in the Eastern Cape.

What's the difference between Sonoff, Tuya, Shelly and Home Assistant?+

Sonoff and Shelly are hardware brands you can buy locally, and each comes with its own app. Tuya is the platform that lots of affordable devices run on. Home Assistant is different: it is free, open-source software that runs on a small computer in your home and brings all those brands together in one app, with automations that do not depend on any company's cloud. We install and configure the whole lot so you are not juggling four apps.

Can you automate irrigation and water on our smallholding?+

Gladly, that is one of the most useful installs we do. We fit controllers that switch irrigation on and off, connect soil moisture and tank level sensors, and wire it so it runs locally without internet. We can also monitor borehole pumps the same way, so a dry tank or a tripped pump alerts you instead of costing you a day's watering.
